The metric shorthand used by most suppliers is kg/m = D² ÷ 162, where D is the bar diameter in millimeters. In imperial units, the physics-based equivalent is lb/ft = 2.673 × D², where D is the diameter in inches — this matches published ASTM nominal weight tables for standard bar sizes #3 through #18.
Total weight for an order is simply unit weight multiplied by total linear length (length per bar × quantity of bars). Estimators typically add 3–5% to account for cutting waste and lap splices when ordering from a supplier.
